14 film stars contesting 2014 Lok Sabha elections

 

 

Several political parties - from the BJP and Congress to even local outfits like Trinamool Congress and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena have managed to rope in popular actors with a massive star appeal. Let's have a look at 15 artistes in the fray in 2014.
 
1.Mahesh Manjrekar: The actor-filmmaker will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North-West as a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate. The 55-year-old, known for films like 'Vaastav' and 'Astitva', has said that he is politically aware and wants 'normal people' to join politics to bring about a change in society.

2.Nagma: Actress Nagma is geared up to contest election from Meerut as Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha election. The actress feels there is a lot of scope for infrastructural development in Meerut. She also plans to improve the education of the young and job opportunities, which she feels are major problems in the area. Connectivity between Meerut and Mumbai, resolving many problems of farmers, issues regarding small-scale industries and law and order situation, problems related to women and children are the things she intends to work on if elected to Lok Sabha from the constituency.

3.Paresh Rawal: Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal will contest on a BJP ticket for the Ahmedabad East Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat. His candidature was a surprise as Rawal replaced the sitting MP Harin Pathak - a seven-time Lok Sabha member from Ahmedabad East - and also considered to be close to senior leader LK Advani. The 'Golmaal' star, a Padma Shri awardee has been long-time admirer of BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi. "To make Narendra Modi our next prime minster is the most important agenda for me and people of my constituency during this election," he said

4.Kirron Kher: The BJP's Chandigarh candidate Kirron Kher will try and woo a 600,000-strong electorate, 60 percent of which is in the 18-40 age-group. Kher had to face protests with black flags and slogans and even eggs being hurled at her as she arrived in Chandigarh to campaign. Kirron, who had joined BJP in 2009, considers herself as the 'daughter of Chandigarh' despite her critics feeling otherwise. She thinks she can work and deliver for the city and promises the constituency to 'get them their rights.

5.Gul Panag: Former Miss India and Bollywood actress Gul Panag who has long been associated with social activism and anti-corruption movement, will contest general elections from Chandigarh on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket. Panag said she joined the AAP movement because she wanted a clean political environment in the country.

6.Hema Malini: The 'Dreamgirl' will be making her maiden foray in the Lok Sabha polls as the BJP candidate from Mathura. The 65-year-old has promised her voters to clean the river Yamuna if elected.  She was member of the Rajya Sabha between 2003 and 2009, while her husband, actor Dharmendra, had served a term in the 14th Lok Sabha after being elected from Rajasthan's Bikaner constituency.

7.Manoj Tiwari: Bhojpuri superstar Manoj Tiwari in 2013 joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The 41-year-old actor is likely to contest the upcoming assembly election in Delhi.

8.Jaya Prada: Actress Jaya Prada recently joined the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). She will be contesting for a Lok Sabha seat for the Bijnore constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Jaya Prada, along with senior leader Amar Singh, was expelled from the Samajwadi Party in 2010 for indulging in activities inimical to its political interests and damaging its image. Both later joined Ajit Singh-led RLD.

9.Moon Moon Sen: Film actress Moon Moon Sen, nominated for the Bankura seat in West Bengal by the Trinamool Congress, says she would be able to change people's lives in a small way if they support her in the Lok Sabha polls. The former Bollywood heroine said that in her new role she would be able to share the "joys, pains and sufferings" of the common people "more intimately".

10.Chiranjeevi: Popular south Indian actor Chiranjeevi is a union minister of state (Independent Charge) for Ministry of Tourism. The actor, who has worked in 149 films, stopped acting to concentrate on his political career. Chiranjeevi prior to the 2009 general elections, formed the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) but later merged it with the Congress.

11.Divya Spandana (Ramya): Divya Spandana, known in Kannada film industry as Ramya, representing the Mandya constituency in Karnataka, is the first female actor from the state to enter the Lok Sabha. Ramya joined the Youth Congress in 2011 and had campaigned for the party in the assembly elections held May 5 which the party won defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party.

12.Ravi Kishen: Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishen contests the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Jaunpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh. The actor says of his constituency, "I understand the pain of the district. I also know how the place can be developed. I do not want to contest polls for money or power which I have both already." He says he is determined to fight elections and may contest as an independent from Jaunpur even if the Congress doesn't give him a ticket.

13.Shatrughan Sinha: The veteran BJP leader will contest for the Patna Sahib seat. Sinha who once described himself as 'once a Bihari Babu, always a Bihari Babu,' refused to fight from Delhi constituency when his party approached him to fight from there.

14.Jayasudha: In Telangana, yesteryear actresses Jayasudha will be the glamorous face of the Congress. Currently a Congress MLA from the Secunderabad constituency, Jayasudha plans to seek re-election to the assembly.
